Track of the Week: Warm Amps - “Negative Friends”

Not all dad rock is equal. Whether we’re talking OG ‘70s material, from Bowie to Boston, or more recent artists harkening back to the music of their fathers, the term can be one of endearment or condescension. Jaret Penner & Co. tap into the former on this centrepiece from their new full-length Call the Midwife.

“Negative Friends” opens up with a Reed-like shuffle, throws in just enough curve-balls along the way without venturing too far into psychedelic territory, and ends exactly where you want it to, at a crisp 3:23. No one shows off. Penner’s words perfectly match the no-fucks-given vibe, making just enough sense without making any. The song does what rock n’ roll is supposed to do. It makes you feel cool.
